Cancun, visited by more than 3.3 million vacationers each year, is famous for its many beaches. It's easy to see why. The resort city on Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, is uniquely situated between the Caribbean Sea and the more placid and protected lagoon. If you're headed to this part of Mexico this season, be sure to visit at least one of these top beaches in the area.

A little about beaches in Cancun

Most of the beaches in Cancun are family-oriented, and although you may see a few top-less sunbathers, full nudity is frowned upon. In addition, most beaches here have a life guard during the peak hours and are patrolled by members of the Mexican Navy. All beaches in Mexico are public, and the water is calmest on the north shore of Cancun. "Playa" means beach in Spanish.

Top four beaches in Cancun

1. Playa Forum in Punta Cancun. This beach on the north side of the Cancun resort area is the most popular beach in Cancun and a favorite with families. Its shallow waters also make for good snorkeling and splashing in the waves. This beach is a departure point for many of the flat-bottom boat tours of the area as well as ferry service to Isla Mujeres. Though it can sometimes be crowded, this beach has a fun atmosphere.

2. Playa Chac Mool. Named one of the best beaches in Cancun by "Travel + Leisure" magazine, this resort area beach is much less crowd than many of the neighboring beaches. Though it lacks the lounge chairs and umbrellas that are available for rent on many of the other beaches, it still has the same white sand and sparkling sea view. This is also a good beach for parasailers and windsurfers.

3. Playa San Miguelito. Located on the Caribbean Sea on the south side of the resort area, San Miguelito beach combines white sand and turquoise waters with its own small Mayan ruins, a perfect combination for those who are looking for both history and sun.

4. The Beach at the Camino Real Hotel. If you're looking for a quieter beach experience, head to the south end of the resort area to the Camino Real Hotel. Although the beach is only accessible by walking through the hotel, the beach itself is public. You'll find few, if any, vendors or beach musicians on this stretch of sand.

Every trip to Cancun deserves at least a little time at the beach. Enjoy the sun and surf by visiting Playa Forum, Playa Chac Mool, Playa San Miguelito or the beach at the Camino Real Hotel. Make your trip easier by hiring transportation from a company that offers cancun transfers and shuttles.
